Alok Institute and Recode contribute together to the employability of young people with high potential and who had their opportunities limited by their social conditions.
We supported the Recode Pro program – training in full stack programming (jr developers) – which had more than 9,000 subscribers. These young people went through a selection process of several phases, and then participated in training and the employability path.
All the candidates had access to Recode Digital Empowerment Courses (EAD), and went on to the next stage based on criteria such as level of vulnerability, interest and affinity with technology and performance in the course;
1,350 young people were selected to take part of a Virtual Hackathon, exploring the programming in a practical and objective way. It was an incredible experience that brought together the young people and 72 mentors, in a three-day journey of a lot of learning and exchanges between the teams.
Participants accepted the challenge of creating technological solutions to problems that have affected different groups belonging to minorities in Brazilian society. In all, prototypes of 180 impact solutions were developed, 24 of which were winners to benefit indigenous peoples, women, blacks, special needs people, immigrants in refugee situations and LGBTQIA+.
Heading to a new life:
Following the project submissions in the Hackathon phase, 600 young individuals were pre-selected and individually interviewed. Out of these, 360 people (divided into 6 groups of 60) were selected for training with a focus on full-stack programming (junior developers).
The journey also includes a significant dive into the development of socio-emotional skills such as problem-solving, collaboration and ethics, creativity and communication.
With that we have empowered programmers with a critical sense and a desire to transform their communities.
Here are the results of this partnership:
285 young individuals from São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Recife, Salvador, Curitiba, Florianópolis and Porto Alegre graduated, with 58.2% of Black individuals, 32.3% women, and 18.2% LGBTQIAP+.
229 are already employed (80.3%), across 57 companies.
The average income of these young men and women before the program was R$563.00. Today the average salary is up to R$2,800.00.
