In 2021, Alok Institute collaborated with UNICEF to support a health security initiative in schools in Maranhão. In various locations of Maranhão State, we partnered with the Josué Montello Foundation, UNICEF and other entities to support the Quilombola Baby Week happening during the UN Human Rights Week, held from December 5th to 9th of that year.

The event’s main goal was to address relevant topics related to early childhood of Black and Quilombola children in Maranhão within the context of cultural and ancestral values experienced in Quilombola communities, integrating them into public policies.
- The nine participating and benefited communities were: Samucangaua, Peroba, Santa Maria, Arenhengaua, Santo Inácio, Cajueiro, Peru, Itamatatiua, and Pavão.
- 424 individuals participated in the activities.
- 300 children enrolled in schools and were included in public policy interventions through the collaboration of two municipal secretaries.
- 18 teenagers acted as mobilizers and executors throughout the week.
- Families were sensitized and informed about rights and care related to childhood.
- A total of 279 kits (including toys, books, drawing materials and treats) were distributed in schools.
- In addition to the nine Community Associations, other groups such as unions, fishermen’s associations, farmers, coconut breakers and churches were involved in the initiative
