About the Health Expeditionaries (EDS)
The Health Expeditionaries (EDS) is a non-profit health organization founded in 2003 by volunteer doctors.
With over two decades of experience, the organization provides free healthcare services, including surgeries, to indigenous populations living in geographically isolated areas of the Amazon rainforest.
Since its founding, EDS has conducted 55 expeditions, with over 300 volunteers covering an area exceeding 500,000 km².
The Beginning:
Occasionally, a group of friends, primarily doctors, would organize nature walks. In 2002, while visiting Pico da Neblina (AM), they had the opportunity to meet a Yanomami village.
Faced with a reality vastly different from their own, the group decided to change the focus of their trips and make a positive impact on the region’s indigenous population. They reached out to the institutions responsible for healthcare services to learn how they operated and to plan an effective way to get involved. As a result, the Expedicionários da Saúde Association (Health Expeditionaries Association) was officially established in 2003.
Since then, their initial walks have evolved into medical expeditions to serve indigenous communities in the Amazon, leading to the “Operating in the Amazon” Program.
